Irene van Dyk Reflects on Life After Silver Ferns Career
Netball legend Irene van Dyk says embracing the rhythms of daily life has been key to finding contentment after a remarkable 12-year retirement from the sport. The former Silver Ferns captain, renowned for her prolific goalscoring, has spoken about the transition from the high-pressure world of competitive netball to a more grounded existence.
Van Dyk, who holds the record for most test goals scored by a Silver Fern, retired from international netball in 2011. She acknowledges that adjusting to life without the intense training schedules, travel, and competition took time. “It was a bit of a journey,” she said. “You’re so used to having this structure and this purpose, and then suddenly it's gone. It’s about finding new anchors.”
She has found those anchors in simple routines. “Sunrise and sunset have become really important to me,” Van Dyk explained. “Just appreciating those moments, being present, and enjoying the quiet.” The former shooter, who played a pivotal role in numerous Silver Ferns campaigns, has also focused on family and other interests outside of netball.
Van Dyk’s career spanned over two decades, making her a household name in New Zealand and a revered figure in the netball community. Her impact on the sport is undeniable, inspiring countless young players with her skill, dedication, and sportsmanship. While she misses the thrill of competition, she expresses gratitude for the experiences and the relationships she forged throughout her career. The focus now is on enjoying the next chapter and embracing the peace and stability that retirement has brought.
