Patient Restrained for Hour at Wishaw Mental Health Unit

Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS) has identified an incident where a patient was restrained for an hour at University Hospital Wishaw’s mental health unit. The findings, revealed in a recent inspection report, highlight concerns regarding the use of prone restraint – a technique where a person is held face down – on patients within NHS Lanarkshire facilities.
The incident at Wishaw was among five cases where prone restraint was employed, prompting scrutiny from HIS inspectors. While the report doesn’t detail the specific reason for the restraint at Wishaw, it underscores the need for careful consideration and adherence to protocols when utilising such interventions. The use of restraint, particularly prone restraint, is subject to strict guidelines designed to minimise risk and ensure patient safety and dignity.
HIS’s report examined various aspects of mental health care provision across NHS Lanarkshire. The five instances of prone restraint represent a specific area of concern identified during the inspection process. The report’s full findings are expected to inform future improvements and review of practices within the health board, with a focus on reducing the reliance on restrictive interventions and promoting alternative approaches to managing patient behaviour.
NHS Lanarkshire has been contacted for comment regarding the findings and the steps being taken to address the concerns raised by Healthcare Improvement Scotland. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
