Strange Credits NSW Halves After Origin Debut
Canberra Raiders playmaker Ethan Strange has lauded the performance of New South Wales’ halves combination, acknowledging their influence on his own impressive State of Origin debut. The young Raider, who made his first appearance for Queensland in Game 2 of the series, says he learned a great deal from watching and playing against the Blues’ pairing.
Strange’s debut came after a string of strong performances for the Raiders in the NRL, earning him a call-up to the Maroons squad. While Queensland ultimately lost the match 26-24, Strange’s contribution was widely praised, with many commentators highlighting his composure and skill under pressure. He played a key role in several attacking plays and showed a willingness to take on the defence.
“They [NSW halves] are a really good combination, and I was able to learn a lot just by being out there alongside them,” Strange said in the aftermath of the game. “Seeing how they control the game, their communication, and their decision-making… it’s something I’ll definitely be taking away and working on.”
The experience has clearly left a lasting impression on the young playmaker, who is already looking forward to future opportunities to represent his state. He’s eager to build on this debut and continue developing his game, with the aim of becoming a regular fixture in the Queensland Origin side. The loss, despite being close, has been viewed as a valuable learning experience for the entire Queensland team, particularly the debutants like Strange.
Queensland coach Billy Slater also praised Strange’s effort, stating he was pleased with the youngster's application and attitude. The focus now shifts to the final game of the series, with Queensland aiming to avoid a clean sweep by New South Wales.
